Public Records Bankruptcy: Will everyone know that I filed for bankruptcy?. Q: Will everyone know that I actually filed bankruptcy? Andrew Bellinson: Yes and no. Is it a public record? Yes, it’s a public record. Somebody is out to find out everything about you, they probably could go on a federal court system public record, put your name in and find out that it was a bankruptcy. But so, there’s every lawsuit that you’ve ever filed or been a part of, or been filed against you is a public record. Your car registration is a public record. Your home loan is a public record. There’s lots of things. That’s not the big thing. The question is, are you gonna have a scarlet letter on you because you filed a bankruptcy? I would say, my experience with my clients is no. I’ve never had a client come back to me and would say, “Oh, all my coworkers know that I filed.” Or “It’s on the news.” I’ve had quite a few locally famous people and at least when they were my client, nothing ever got up about what they were doing. I’ve never had any reporters at the courthouse asking my clients about their bankruptcy.
